The rewards of paying attention

Last night we watched "At Bertram's Hotel", the latest Miss Marple episode of PBS's Mystery! Early on, during a busy scene in the hotel lobby, the manager, while trying to field multiple requests as near to simultaneously as possible, says into the phone, "No, I'm sorry, Miss Otis regrets, she's unable to lunch today."

No character named Miss Otis ever appears, so this was clearly just thrown in for the fun of it.

Who's Rosemary Clooney?

No, that song'll always be Bette Midler's to me.

Who's Rosemary Clooney?

The Coronet paper towel lady. HTH.

Coronet? Never heard of 'em. Nah, just kidding.

That does put me in a nostalgic bent -- for instance, whatever happened to Imperial margarine, or Figurines, for that matter? (That's my guilty secret -- owing to my steady and unrelenting diet of morning game shows in my early youth, I can still remember the full jingle to the Figurines commercial.)

The little fanfare that World Of Warcraft makes when a quest is completed is very very close to the old Imperial margarine fanfare. Every time I hear it coming from Bryon's computer I want to rush in and see if any of the players have a purple-and-gold crown hovering over their heads. Or at least shout out "Imperial!".

Yes, I was a "High Rollers", "Magnificent Marble Machine", "Split Second", "Let's Make A Deal" child, too...

I dreamed of getting on Split Second. Or Joker's Wild. Or Jeopardy! (grumble grumble can't pass the fucking entrance exam grumble)

Should I be ashamed that I recognize every single show you mentioned? (Where's Money Maze?) And, let's face it, old reruns of Match Game and Password on the Game Show Network just don't cut it.

Yeah, whatever. I just googled "miss otis regrets" and used the first link I saw that elucidated the reference comprehensibly.

Of course Miss Otis never appears in the show. She was somewhat otherwise occupied.

Has anyone told Michael Chertoff? This could be a code phrase to folks who wish to attack Miss Marple!
