[livejournal.com profile] jwg and I both carry cell phones when we're out and about. We also both carry our wallets and various other necessities in belt pouches when we're out and about. He carries his cell phone in his pouch; I prefer to carry it on a clip on the belt, because (1) I can get at it faster, and (2) I don't really have enough compartments in the pouch, and I don't want the phone getting in the way when I'm getting out my driver's license or a pencil or something.

The trouble is, now and again certain movements seem to trigger the clip and cause the phone to fall out. Sometimes I notice this, and sometimes I don't. On two occasions this has happened while I was getting into or out of the car at my voice lesson, and I was fortunate in both cases to be able to go back and find it under where the car had been parked (not having been driven over, taken, or otherwise vanished).

So what happened yesterday?

We hadn't been to the house in Cambridge in well over a week, and we felt that we really ought to pick up the mail, so we needed a good excuse to drive all the way in; and we ended up choosing to see a movie, which means going to the Kendall Square Cinema and following it up with dinner at the Blue Room.

Somewhat annoyingly, the Blue Room turned out to be taking a vacation this week, but we went ahead and saw Paris, je t'aime, which was fun, and kind of weird. After which, we went to dinner at the Cambridge Brewing Company, which, while not the Blue Room, was pretty nice. As we were getting ready to leave, John discovered that he did not have the hat that he had been wearing when we entered the theater, and had taken off sometime during the movie.

So he went back to the theater to find out if it had been found (it had) while I went to pick up the car, and we drove uneventfully home, listening to the Red Sox dismember the Devil Rays. Except that upon entering the house I discovered that my phone was not on my belt. I supposed/hoped that it had fallen out either in the car or as I was getting out of the car at home, but I could not find it in the car or the driveway. I suggested that John call it in case it was hiding somewhere in or near the car; he did so, and I didn't hear it ring; but someone answered it -- an attendant at the One Kendall Square parking garage. He asked them to hold on to it, as it was impractical for us to go back yesterday evening.

Well, at least it's not lost. The next time we're scheduled to be in the area is Tuesday evening, and I don't think I want to be without the phone that long; so we need an excuse to go in again. Of course, a few new movies are opening today. and the Blue Room reopens tomorrow, so we'll see.

Modern conveniences are so... convenient.

Thanks, that's a very kind offer, but as it turned out we went back to get it today. An additional reason that we chose yesterday was that John needed to get to the Cambridge library by today to pick up a book -- but somehow (the whole thing becomes more and more a comedy of errors) he got it into his head that it was to return a book which he then forgot to bring, so he didn't bother to go to the library yesterday. So we decided to go in today so that he could pick up his book and I could get my phone (despite the fact that John had given the garage my name, we didn't want to worry about what might happen if we didn't pick it up within a day or two).

This, of course, allowed us to drive back to Gloucester during the leading edge of rush hour and through one or more thunderstorms.

Wearing a phone on a clip on your waist is not only inconvenient, it is *terribly* unfashionable. You must stop that behaviour *IMMEDIATELY*.

You've known me for how many years now, and you're talking to me about being "fashionable"?
