As those of you who follow such things know, Jonathan Papelbon blew his first save of the season Tuesday night. (If the foregoing means nothing to you, don't worry, it just means that there's nothing of interest to you in this post.)

It so happens that this was the first game of the season to which [livejournal.com profile] jwg and I had tickets. It also happens that, because of the conspiracies of weather and schedule, it made good sense for us to go to Gloucester Monday night and spend the first part of Tuesday working in the garden. As we were preparing to head out on Monday, [livejournal.com profile] jwg asked me if we should take our Red Sox caps along, just in case, but I said no, we would certainly be coming home before the game so we wouldn't have to drive to/park near Fenway.

As it turns out, this was the wrong answer, but not for the obvious reason. We made it back to Cambridge in plenty of time to have supper and catch the #47 bus to the game. But it was only when we were preparing to leave for the game that we discovered that the caps were not, in fact, to be found: they had been left in Gloucester the previous fall and never retrieved -- as we would have discovered in a more timely fashion if we had decided to take them with us Monday night.

So we went to the game without our hats, and look what happened.

The hats are in Cambridge now.

Wild game tonight. Were you hatless or hatful? Or does the hat affect not work unless you are actually there?

We don't wear caps when watching a game at home. Actually once, I remember we put them on in a tight moment and it worked.

Generally, home use of the caps is reserved for post-season. And yes, that was quite a game. Owing to other engagements (http://rsc.livejournal.com/66910.html), I didn't start watching it until it was already 5-5. Not seeing the first inning was probably good for my blood pressure.

Curt Schilling's job is to pitch. I don't really care what he thinks, and still less what he says.
