What's on the menu
Mar. 11th, 2007 10:58 pmWe're in Napier, the town that rebuilt itself in Art Deco style after an earthquake destroyed it in 1931. We had dinner tonight at a restaurant named "Taste", which has fairly elaborate (and excellent) food and an attitude that can best be described as "pretentious but laughing at its own pretensions". The waiter was a hoot, as he explained in great detail how the specials were prepared, and also when he cleared our plates after the starter of bread with dips, and, having picked up our used knives, also decided to take the forks, saying he would bring us all fresh cutlery. Overhearing our murmured wonderings about what was wrong with the (unused) forks, he said, "It's more fun for me to put out a whole new set."
Anyway, the menu posted outside had the following as the last of their first courses:
The Grazing Board
The ideal way to start the night. Taste's selection of dead things, pickled goods & assorted creatures served with toasted bread & dips.
The version on the menu that we got at the table was slightly different (unfortunately I didn't think to write it down at the time), in that it listed some of the "dead things & assorted creatures", including "kangaroo skewers" (which I suppose was actual kangaroo meat on skewers), plus a note about some things that they didn't want to reveal in advance and spoil the surprise. (We didn't order it. It was NZ$28 [about US$20] and probably would have been way too much food for an appetizer.)
