We've taken advantage of the current interval of pleasant weather to try to fill up the holes in the garden. Things have been pretty slow, and the zinnia situation has been especially discouraging, especially since I finally accepted the fact that all the zinnia-like seedlings in the bed where I had planted the "classic" or linearis zinnias were the unidentified weed whose seedlings look exactly like zinnias. Clearl;y, Something Had To Be Done.

So we went off to the two local garden places that seem to have the most plants. Wolf Hill didn't have a whole lot of annuals in flats (we weren't about to buy single plants), but they had petunias in several useful colors, and maybe some annual asters -- I can't remember for sure now what we got there and what at Marshall's. But I do know that it was at Marshall's that we found flats of "star" zinnias -- which are really classics -- in orange and white, along with another single-flowered variety ("profusion") that looks like they'll go well with the stars. So what with all this stuff and the dahlias and the salpiglossis we're in pretty good shape. There are a couple of holes, and there will be more later when the pansies wilt in the heat (I assume there will be heat) and when the peas and lettuce are finished, but we have a few things in reserve (assuming the seedlings grow up to be healthy and strong), plus some seeds for yet another kind of zinnia and some small snapdragons. Not to mention the large number of snapdragon volunteers all over the place, most especially (and somewhat annoyingly) in the box that's supposed to be reserved for Persian Carpet zinnias. Plus the johnny-jump-up volunteers just about everywhere.

I know that any minute now all this stuff is going to start growing Really Fast, and we're going to have to deploy sprinklers.

Starting tomorrow, strawberries for breakfast!

I have a petunia addiction. I can't stop buying them.
