(Some of you may possibly find this amusing; some will just shrug; and some (the largest subset, I shouldn't wonder) will have no idea what I'm on about. C'est, as they say, la vie.)

The Kansas City Royals are unlikely to win anything that matters next year, but if they were to sign Nomar Garciaparra to play shortstop they would be pretty well guaranteed to have the most letters in their infield, possibly in all of Major League history. I cannot, off the top of my head, think of a suitable third baseman to complete the set.

(For those of you who have some idea what this is about but haven't actually been following the off-season closely, they recently signed first baseman Doug Mientkiewicz and second baseman Mark Grudzielanek.)

Except he's not in espn.com's player list, so I'm guessing he hasn't played in the majors, at least not recently.

This is what I get for using MLB.com. They list him as a Pirates 3B but have no statistics for him. He's probably a minor leaguer.
