Why I hate NStar and love my TiVo

rscA couple of weeks ago, we received one of those letters we occasionally get from NStar (our beloved supplier of electricity) informing us that the power would be turned off for some maintenance function sometime between 1:00 and 3:00 AM on November 14th or 15th. But then, a couple of days later, we got a (recorded) phone call from them saying that they would be turning off the power briefly either that night or the next; and sure enough, two mornings later we woke up to find that our non-battery-operated clocks were all 20 minutes or so behind.
We therefore assumed that they had moved up the scheduled maintenance. So yesterday (which was, remember, November 14) we woke up to discover that our non-battery-operated clocks were once again 20 minutes or so behind -- which resulted in![[livejournal.com profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/external/lj-userinfo.gif)
jwg almost being late for a meeting. More annoyingly, it caused us to lose the last 7 minutes of Part I of the Masterpiece Theater show about Queen Elizabeth I.
Here's where the TiVo comes in. We've told it to record first-run episodes of Masterpiece Theater, but also to record Desperate Housewives, which presents a conflict; but fortunately it's smart enough to consider Channel 2's repeat of MT at midnight to be "first-run" for this purpose, so that's what it records. But, apparently, the power went out at 1:53 AM on Monday.
So, we discovered when watching the show yesterday evening that we were missing the last 7 minutes. So we quickly went to the TiVo to find out if there were any further repeats of it upcoming, and found out that Channel 44 was broadcasting it from 8:00-10:00 that very evening, and it now being 9:30 we instantly told it to record what remained of the episode. Half an hour later, there we were, up to date with the Queen.
Still, I wish NStar would knock it off.
