...while at the beach this afternoon.

It is annoying to feel a little splash on one's shoulder and discover that one has been, er, anointed by an overflying gull.

On the other hand, there is this whole ocean to rinse off in, and it's helpful to have a reason to decide that one has been baking long enough and it's time to go into the water.

In a healthier society, I wouldn't have to adjust my bathing trunks after every third wave to make sure they don't slip off, because I wouldn't be wearing anything while in the water.

The surf was pretty good today. The water was on the chilly side¹ (too cold for [livejournal.com profile] jwg) but what the hell, it was a hot day, and we don't get good surf that often.

¹This is Gloucester, "on the chilly side" = "well above average".

Too cold for me is when I stand in 1 foot of water for a minute and my feet hurt.

I tried twice. I could have done it with a running start but I decided to wimp out in spite of the appealling surf.

For me, "too cold" means that when I jump in, the shock of the change of temperature takes my breath away for longer than I can comfortably hold my breath, causing me to actually have to do without air that I feel I need.

Which beach(es) do you boys go to? When we were teeny tots my parents took us all the time to Good Harbor Beach. Then we defected from Gloucester, down the road to Rockport's Cape Hedge Beach.

To me, too cold means no longer liquid. I don't particularly enjoy cold water surf, but I can tolerate it for a while esp. if it means an excuse to cuddle up with a warm man to restart my metabolism.

We go to Good Harbor, which as far as I know is the only beach in Gloucester that ever gets decent surf. Once or twice a year we go by canoe to Wingaersheek, because we can.

I heartily approve of the kind of trunks that need that kind of adjustment, because they are in tune with that part of Nature which decrees that they shouldn't be on you in the first place, and they are simply trying to obey her directive.

Of course my views aren't socially acceptable in all venues...

Well, exactly. Wearing clothes in the water is just stupid -- they'll only get wet.
