Take me out...

So, you look at your watch at the end of the first inning and note that it took 40 minutes. At this rate the game will last [pause for calculation]... six hours!? Well, at least the very talky 10-year-old behind us won't last anywhere near that long.

Fortunately, things picked up as the game went on, and it was actually over before 10:30. Also, once they got to the 5th, the Sox figured out that taking one-run leads wasn't working and they needed to score more runs. And the talky kid didn't last the whole game -- or rather, his father didn't. They left at the end of the 7th, with the kid complaining because he wanted to see Schilling pitch. Dad said, "they're up by six runs, he's not gonna pitch today." I couldn't resist turning around and saying "That's what we thought yesterday." He acknowledged this, but they left anyway. (Schilling didn't pitch.)

It wasn't the most beautiful game ever played, but the result was good, and there were various encouraging signs, of which the pitching of Wade Miller was not one. I worry about our starting pitching.

At least Mariners fans never got their hopes up this year, unlike us Padres fans.

So, not much chance we'll be seeing more of Mark Bellhorn, huh?

Well, Jackie McMullin did remind us in today's Globe that one of Francona's traits as a manager is a strong sense of loyalty. Of course Theo and/or Larry may just decide to take the decision out of his hands.

On the other hand, I'm glad I wasn't at tonight's game. Again, the right result, but oh, brother...
