Last night during the eighth inning I overheard a fan refer to the manager as "Grady Francona".

Cold comfort: the last three World Series have been won by wildcard teams.

I still maintain that firing Grady Little was a stupid knee-jerk reaction.

Well, although the Established Wisdom is that Little was fired solely for the sin of leaving Pedro in too long in game 7, that's almost surely not true. From what I understand, the front office had decided to replace him because of philosphical differences -- he didn't go along with their "statistical" approach. Now, mind you, if the Sox had won that game, it would have been harder (from a public relations point of view) to fire him; but the loss and the mistake (if it was one, which I think it was) gave them a convenient excuse.
