I went to the shopping center on Eastern Ave. to buy groceries, and also to visit radio Shack to pick up a new pair of foam covers for the earphones on my portable tape player (the old ones were in shreds). Just as I started to get out of the car, my cell phone started vibrating incessantly. Nothing I tried would make it stop, so I powered it off. When I tried powering it on again, it wouldn't boot.

Well, I was going to Radio Shack anyway, so I thought they might have an idea about this. The guy thought that the battery might have died a final death -- something they supposedly do eventually, and this one is over two years old -- and found a replacement battery. Of course it wasn't charged, but since I had grocery shopping to do anyway, I left the phone there to charge.

I came back after getting the groceries, and the phone was working just fine. So I paid for the new battery ($50, for chrissake) and headed out. Just as I was about to pull out of the parking lot, the phone started vibrating again. U-turn. This time I didn't dare shut it off, but instead tried various things and noted that the phone still worked, but was awfully hard to hear over the buzzing, and anyway, this just Wasn't Right.

The conclusion was that something was shorted somewhere (the guy at RS said he'd never seen anything like this behavior before), and that what had happened before (and was now happening again) was that the continuous vibrating was running the battery down in a matter of minutes.

So I need a new phone. But of course you can't just buy a new phone. The original contract had run out on this one ("You're probably month-to-month now"), so I would have to start a new contract with Verizon. Which I can't do by myself, because [livejournal.com profile] jwg and I are on a family plan, and the contract is in his name. This is ridiculous, of course, but it appears to be the way things are. At least they didn't make me keep (and pay for) the new battery.

So we have to go to Radio Shack together sometime. Preferably soon. I earnestly hope that it will be possible to rescue the contents of the old one's phone book.

Oh, and the earphone covers I bought are the wrong size, because I wasn't smart enough to bring the earphones with me.

Though I can understand your frustration, it makes an amusing story. Technology, ain't it wonderful?
