Curious encounter
Aug. 2nd, 2006 12:25 pmOn Monday, when we were still having reasonable weather,
jwg and I took the canoe out for a run, and on our way back we passed fairly close inshore along the western side of Wheeler Point. There are several houses in this stretch, where the bank is pretty steep, that have extensions on pilings built out over the river. We were commenting to each other on one in particular, which seemed to have no land-based portion at all, when a voice greeted us from the screened-in porch of said house. We responded to the greeting, and then, as we were paddling on, the man in the porch said "I've seen you guys before somewhere." John allowed as how we lived in the neighborhood, and the man replied that he thought he'd seen us at the theater, presumably meaning the Gloucester Stage Company. Since we are in fact regulars at the GSC, we acknowledged that this was likely.
Then he said, "But I think I saw you somewhere before that. Maybe contradancing?" Yes, indeed. At Jamaica Plain? "Yes."
We couldn't really see him through the screen, and we were working on getting home (against the tide and the wind, of course), so we didn't get a chance to garner more details; therefore I still have no idea who he is. Not a JP regular, I would guess. Still, I continue to be struck by the smallness of the world.
