Does anyone know why, at the start of the bottom of the 6th in last night's Mariners/Red Sox game, the Seattle manager was prevented from taking the starter out? ([personal profile] susandennis, did the announcers say anything useful about it?) I don't think I've ever seen such a thing before.

This is exactly the kind of thing the umpires should announce over the PA system, for the benefit of the fans in the stands, instead of just reporting the bare results of replay reviews (which is not actually any more information than we were already getting from hand signals).

So. According to our manager, he was looking for more warm up time for the reliever. So he asked the home plate umpire if the starter could take a couple of warm up pitches from the mound and then be replaced and the umpire said sure. Then the starter crossed the foul line going to the mound and that was the issue. The other 3 umpires said NOPE. Once the starter crosses the foul line, he has to pitch to at least one batter unless he's injured.

I was actually listening to the Boston radio broadcast and they said the exact same thing... it was the best time for umpire over PA system explanation.

It was very weird. But the rest of the game was kind of like I expected. One of these, we'll flop the win but with the same bungling on both sides. Geesh. At least you got action!
