Not a big deal in light of current events, but not something I really needed right now.

Late yesterday afternoon, we heard what sounded like a bunch of stuff falling over, but couldn't immediately find a cause either in the kitchen (my guess) or outside ([Unknown site tag]'s).

This morning we discovered the cause: one of the supports under the top shelf of my sheet-music bookshelf had broken, causing the shelf to spill its contents (all of the solo piano music except for the ones that have actually been used any time recently, which are piled on the piano) onto the floor at the feet of the piano bench. (Overlooked yesterday because the room in question was dark, and it didn't occur to us to look.)

Some of those books are old, and weren't in very good shape. They're in worse shape now. All are piled on the couch in the music room. I'm not sure what we're going to do about repairing the bookshelf (nothing right now, what with hardware stores likely not going to be useful anytime soon).

Here in California, at least, hardware and plumbing are considered essential businesses, so they're allowed and encouraged to stay open, along with restaurant take-out and delivery , grocery stores, and pharmacies. Some hardware stores also sell disinfecting wipes or toilet paper. :-)

So I've been told elsewhere. I'm not sure, however, that I'm likely to be going to a hardware store this week. It's possible that I can find replacement supports online.

Well, as it turned out, I did go the hardware store; I had some postal mail that needed to be mailed, and that made an excuse for [livejournal.com profile] jwg and me to go for a walk (down Pleasant St. as far as it goes and back by way of Magazine), and we needed a couple of other things that the hardware store would have anyway. Found shelf supports fairly similar to the ones that came with the shelf, although it's possible that they need slightly bigger holes, a need that can be accommodated fairly easily if need be.

And, indeed, one of the holes (why not both? who knows) did need to be expanded a bit, which [livejournal.com profile] jwg did easily with a round file. The shelf is back in place. The books that used to be on it are still piled on the couch, waiting for me to get around to sorting and re-shelving them.
