[livejournal.com profile] jwg recently posted a list of travel destinations outside the US and Canada that he'd like to visit during the next five years (way too many for that to be actually possible). Rather than post my corresponding list, which would be largely the same, I'll just mention a few ways my list would be different: I'd probably omit Russia (GLBT issues aside), and I'm not so sure about Colombia and Brazil. I'd likely add South Africa*, Iceland, maybe Alsace/Lorraine*. (As in John's post, I'm using * to indicate places I haven't been.)

Meanwhile, just to complicate matters, there are a fair number of places in North America that require more planning than just jumping in the car (e.g., Vermont, Maine) or hopping on a train (e.g., New York City) that I'd like to do:

Washington, DC
Northern California*
Yellowstone National Park*
Austin, TX(*)
Seattle and environs (esp. Olympic Peninsula*)
Fairbanks, AK*
Pittsburgh (including the new ballpark*)
Perry, NY*

Toronto & environs
Montréal
Québec City
Gaspé Peninsula
Nova Scotia*
Prince Edward Island*

And I'm probably leaving some out. (I also haven't included the San Francisco Bay Area and Monte Toyon, which is kind of a given.) The (*) notation on Austin refers to the fact that I attended a conference there many years ago, but essentially saw nothing but the hotel.

Boy, this stuff gets complicated real fast.

Nova Scotia is one of the best kept secrets on the east coast. We've been there twice (different places each time) and it's totally worth the hassle of getting out there.

There's a great bookshop in Perry, NY but the name escapes me.
