If you've been watching the PBS "Sherlock" series, I'd be interested in your thoughts. If you haven't watched the most recent episode, don't look behind the cut.

Is there any way they can continue the series? Yeah, I know Doyle killed Holmes off and then resurrected him, but we've seen the body. OTOH, what's that last shot supposed to mean?

They could cheat and make it all a dream of Watson's, but that would really piss me off; they're not Dallas, after all.

Holmes ISN'T dead - that last shot has him, very much alive watching lurking in the cemetery, watching Watson and [Mrs Housekeeper, name eluding me] visit the grave.

He faked his own death. Notice that his ally at the hospital made sure that Watson didn't get too close to the body [not Sherlock's] on the sidewalk.

So, do we suppose that he somehow managed to throw Moriarty's body off the roof instead, while appearing to still be himself standing on the ledge? That's the only explanation I can think of -- there wasn't exactly a ready supply of Sherlock-like bodies around.

It's been since January for moi - I saw it in the UK - but as I recall he was atop a hospital, and had a crony/ someone who would do stuff for him in the building. If there's a morgue in the hospital...

I believe the conversation Explaining It All (or most of it) that I heard, had Sherlock falling into a dumpster - so yes, it was him jumping, but Watson didn't see him land. The body is from the morgue, but Watson doesn't get close (because the corpse will not look like - or even be dressed as - sherlock. For some plot-related reason (which eludes me now), it's important that Watson believe Sherlock has died. And he does, and so do we the audience until we see him at the grave.

it's not all that different from the bait-and-switch at which he manages to save the woman (Irene Adler, the S&M artiste) from *Scandal in Belgravia* - she was sentenced to be decapitated , but Sherlock saves her literally at the last minute.

OK, that makes sense, of a sort. By the way, the "plot-related reason" is that Moriarty has told Sherlock that if he is seen to be alive, the thugs that M has hired will kill Watson, Mrs Hudson, and somebody else (Lestrade?). Or something like that.
