Quite a storm
Aug. 10th, 2011 12:09 pmYesterday evening
jwg and I went to the contra dance at MIT, in part to scout the room to see if it's suitable for a possible joint event with our Jamaica Plain dance (it is, just).
The dance was fun, but the drive home was through one of the most torrential downpours I've ever seen hereabouts. I like a good rainstorm. and a good thunderstorm even more, but not to drive through, especially at night. I can't recall another occasion on which I've had to run the wipers at high speed the whole way from Cambridge to Gloucester. I'm rather hoping it never happens again.
Perhaps in consequence of the tension this produced, I had a lot of trouble sleeping last night, despite having spent a half-hour or so on the Internet trying to unwind. This meant that I got to hear the part of the storm that involved major lightning and thunder, including one strike that seemed to be quite close. Safe in bed is the right way to experience such a storm, thank you very much.
There was 2 inches of water in the rain gauge this morning, which is pretty impressive for probably no more than 8 hours of rain. On top of the 2.5" we got over the weekend, I don't think we'll have to water the garden for a while.
