Apparently it's us...

...and not the seats.

Just as we were about to settle into our regular Fenway Park seats this evening, someone approached us and asked if we would mind trading for their (significantly better) seats, since they had friends or family in the seats immediately in front of ours. We were happy to oblige, especially since their seats were four rows further forward and two sections nearer home plate than ours.

So we went and sat in the other seats -- it's really amazing how much difference two sections make. I could happily sit in those seats on a regular basis.

Then it occurred to jwg to worry whether our charm would lose its magic by our not being in our usual seats. But no fear -- the Sox won, despite a somewhat nervous-making ninth. They are now 16-3 in games attended by us.

If (as seems increasingly likely -- sorry, susandennis!) the Sox make the postseason, I'm tempted not to let any of the folks who share our subscription buy any of the games. We're clearly better for the team than they are.

When we were there, the people around us were significantly confused about which row was which. Somehow, everyone managed to find a seat, though the people next to us had tickets for row 9, while we had tickets for row 10. The people behind us were quite certain that they were correctly in row 11, while the people in front of our neighbors were just as certain that they were in row 8. I really have no idea whether we were in your seats or not. I really expected at some point to find an entire row missing, with a few dozen people left standing, but it didn't happen.


Maybe that was the the problem.



We were also surprised by the lack of singing of the National Anthem. Normally, you can hear it from my home, so I don't know how we could have missed it.

Hey - if they didn't sing the anthem, doesn't that mean that the game can't count?

Row numbering is particularly confusing since Row 10 in our section corresponds to Row 6 across the aisle in section 28.

The sound system is so bad. In both our seats and last night's section 25 seats you can't hear Take Me Out to the Ball Game being played - and it takes several lines before you can hear the nearby crowd singing. Sometimes the out-of-sync out-of-tune is just incredible.

Does anyone know what they play on the PA system before the bottom of the eight inning? It has words something like "We shall ... or We are..." The only words I can make out clearly are:
"so good, so good, so good " not sung but chanted.

The row number is painted on the riser of the step nearest the seats, and (as far as I can tell) nowhere else, so it's easy to get confused. A couple of years ago our seats were easy to spot because one of them had a replaced-and-not-yet-painted slat.

How close to game time did you arrive? As John says, the sound system is pretty terrible, and I would bet that the sound carries better to the other side of the Fens than to the concourse under the stands, or even to the street immediately outside the park.

Did you see the "ceremonial first pitch" or hear the kid lip-synch the shout of "Play Ball"?

We saw both ceremonial "first" pitches, and the kids lip-synching (there were three of them) "Play Ball!"

Perhaps we were in the concourse or going through security while it was playing. It is surprising that I can hear it more reliably at home than right in front of the park.
