So, let's see if this live journal stuff actually works.

Last month John ([livejournal.com profile] jwg) and I decided to buy a flat-screen TV and, while we were at it, a DVD player. So of course now we needed some DVDs. And why not start off with a splash? Sure enough, there on amazon was a DVD version of the 1990 Metropolitan Opera production of Der Ring des Niblungen -- a mere 7 disks for a mere $109.

Now I'm working my way through it, one act a time. The interesting thing is that John is watching it with me; up until about a year ago he would have fled in horror at the mere suggestion of Wagner, but he was sucked in last year by a TV broadcast of Tristan und Isolde. Now that we're almost all the way through the Ring (one act to go[1]), he's clearly hooked.

As it happens, after decades of no interest in Tolkien, he enjoyed the first two movies so much that he decided to read the books. Clearly, he's coming over to the Dark Side.

So who said rings aren't powerful?

[1] And just in time, too; now that baseball season has started, there's a lot less free viewing time.
