Burningbright (see icon) always complains when we don't take him to Tigers games, but he's probably just as happy he wasn't there last night.

This was our 15th and last game of the regular season¹, and the Sox won 2-1. They're 13-2 in those 15 games.

Lester threw a lot of pitches in the 1st, and was lucky to get out of the 2nd with only one run scoring, and I was beginning to wonder if his recent run of excellent outings was a cruel tease. But then he settled down and pitched one of his best games of the season.

At the break in the middle of the 5th, I joked that Middlebrooks had better see at least 8 pitches in his next at-bat, considering that his error had made Lester throw 7 extra pitches (and the Sox had not been doing a very good job of running up Scherzer's pitch count). In the event, Middlebrooks's at-bat in the bottom of the 5th lasted exactly one pitch -- which he lined into center for a two-run single, providing the margin of victory. All is forgiven.

It says a lot about Farrell's confidence in rookie pitcher Brandon Workman that he brought him in the 8th in a one-run game to face one batter -- that batter being Miguel Cabrera, the league's leading hitter. (Cabrera was out on a routine fly ball to right.)

I've never liked the Wave, and I particularly don't like it when there are runners on base in a close game. Shouldn't all the fans just be watching the game?

Koji Uehara retired the side in order in the 9th on 9 pitches. He has retired the last 21 batters he has faced. Maybe the team is fortunate that both of their projected closers (Hanrahan and Bailey) had season-ending injuries in July.

¹The ticket distribution actually left us with 18, but we didn't want to go to that many, so we sold three to a friend. The team is 1-1 with one to play in those three.
