Things are not so great, as it turns out.

A few days after he returned to his apartment, the swelling in his legs and feet returned, and in consequence he is again having a lot of difficulty getting around, and especially things like getting up our of chairs. (Apparently the real problem here is that, owing to the fluid buildup, his legs are extremely heavy.) His doctor has prescribed bed rest (mostly to get him some time with his legs elevated, to counteract his tendency to spend many hours at a time sitting at the computer), and he is once again resident in the on-site nursing facility, although he is free to go back and forth between there and his apartment. The doctor doesn't think she can put him back on diuretics, because his kidneys can't handle it. It's not clear if the fluid accumulation is correctable, or whether it's just a matter of maintenance from here on out. He's frustrated, but also resigned.

Still, he was able to go out to dinner yesterday (his 93rd birthday) with Dan and Gretta and a "friend" of his, who might actually be a sort of girlfriend, and (according to Dan's report) had a good time.

One day at a time...
