The Kool-Aid
Mar. 24th, 2008 02:06 pmThe past finds one in unexpected ways, and even if the circumstances aren't entirely happy, the results can bring unexpected pleasures.
Last week, I found a message on my home phone from an elementary- and high-school classmate from whom I had not heard in a very long time, and when I called him back I learned that another of our classmates had died suddenly of a heart attack about a month earlier. A number of these people have apparently remained friends; I effectively lost contact with all my high-school friends and acquaintances a long time ago.
It turns out that there is an email list of our class, of which I knew nothing because the latest email address anyone had for me was obsolete. This has now been corrected, and as a result I've been having a bit of correspondence with another classmate, a rather quirky woman (whom I remember as a rather quirky girl), who forwarded to me the picture reproduced below, which apparently turned up in a search for memorabilia about the deceased classmate, the "Denis" referred to in the caption, who has his back to the camera; the kid in the foreground (with the strangely-patterned shirt) is apparently me. I don't know exactly when this picture was taken, but 1954 or '55 seems like a good bet.
