A motss.con non-report
Aug. 24th, 2007 12:06 pmI'm way too lazy to do a detailed report on the weekend in Palo Alto (even if I actually remembered all the details), and it would bore most of you silly anyway. So I'll content myself with a few remarks, observations, what you will.
Palo Alto is a lovely little city, with lots of good food.
Speaking of food, Arnold Z. can decide what I'm going to eat any time, and I know I'll be happy.
weatherjesus and
jankplus remind me more of
jwg and me every time I see them. I don't know who should find this scarier, us or them.
kenrudolph is one mean bridge-player. I wish I had the same courage to bid six hearts when I know that's where the hand belongs.
Segways are fun, and not at all difficult. (Even
pipyn, who professed to be terrified, didn't seem to be having any actual difficulty.) They are, however, kind of hard on the feet; we were essentially standing for two hours.
Based on my limited experience of Caltrain, it's a much more pleasant and reliable experience than the MBTA's commuter rail.
I do, on the other hand, have some issues with the BART ticket machines, or at least one particular machine in the Millbrae station. (That machine's refusal to accept quarters was probably an aberration, but the user interface for credit card use is horrible.)
Cons generally involve a lot of walking, and this one was no exception. This is a good thing, as they also involve a lot of eating, and this one was definitely no exception. I suspect the walking didn't quite counteract the eating.
I feel so much safer knowing that the TSA won't let anyone blow up a plane with more than three ounces of sunscreen.
Any hotel that puts out freshly-baked chocolate chip cookies at 5:00 PM every day gets points in my book.
These cons are not the sex-fests that they were back in the mid-90s. (Unless people are just hiding it better.) Whether there's any correlation between this and the increased amount of gray hair remains unproven.
I had a great time. It was wonderful to see so many old friends, many of whom I hadn't seen in a decade or so, and to meet a few new people. I'm not going to list names, either of LJers or others, because I'll forget somebody.
I will, however, single out for thanks
vasilatos, who arranged the hotel, and
baybryj and Arnold, who organized a wonderful weekend.
