I commented in this entry in
susandennis's journal that I had expected to hate Brothers and Sisters because of the presence of actors who usually irritate me, specifically naming Calista Flockhart and Sally Field. But I was also thinking about Patricia Wettig, who doesn't bother me at all these days.
I realized that, in the case of Wettig, the irritation goes back to her days as Nancy on thirtysomething. Of course I've also been irritated for years by Timothy Busfield, but I grew to like his Danny Concannon on The West Wing, and I find that there's nothing irritating about his character on Studio 60.
Which led me to the realization that the reason these people bothered me was that they played really irritating characters on thirtysomething -- and, in fact, there wasn't a single regular on that show who wasn't irritating, and that that was kind of the point of the show. And that it's unfair to blame the actors.
Sally Field still drives me up the wall, but I think that's because of the roles I've seen her in (in addition to this one, that's primarily Abby's bipolar mother on ER).
In any case, getting back to Brothers and Sisters, Rachel Griffiths is worth the price of admission (yeah, well, an hour a week isn't that high a price, is it?), and Dave Annable is lovely to look at.
