Pardon me while I boast a bit
Jul. 25th, 2015 12:17 pmI don't claim to be as good a baseball strategist as any Major League (or Minor League, or Little League, or any at all) manager, but I did have a moment of self-satisfaction at last night's Tigers-Red Sox game. Top of the 11th, 1 out, runners on first and second, Victor Martinez at bat. On a full count, the runners go, and Martinez fouled the pitch off. I turned to
jwg and remarked that I had long held a dim view of sending runners from 1st and 2nd with less than two out and a left-handed batter at the plate, because the catcher has a clear shot at third.¹ Sure enough, on the next pitch, the runners go again, Martinez strikes out, and Ian Kinsler is easily out at 3rd.
The Sox went on to win (yes, they actually won) in the bottom of the inning.
¹I don't know whether I once heard a commentator mention this, or arrived at it on my own.
