Can't get no worse
Apr. 19th, 2010 02:58 pmBaseball has a lot pieces of "Conventional Wisdom", usually in short pithy sentences. One of these is "You can't win a pennant in April, but you can lose one." (People who follow these things will know what brought that to my mind.)
On the face of it, of course, it's nonsense; each game counts the same, no matter what month it's played in. On the other hand, there are lots of examples of teams that got off to a really good start and then faded. And it's not inconceivable that a team could be so demoralized by a terrible April that they never recover.
On the other hand, a certain team not far to the south has had some mediocre-to-bad Aprils in recent years (not this one, so far) and still managed to make the playoffs. And the A's used to do this with great regularity as well.
So I'm not writing the season off quite yet.
